DIY vs. Professional Pressure Washing

What’s the Difference—and Which Should You Choose?

Short answer: DIY is fine for light touch-ups on durable surfaces. For roofs, painted exteriors, pavers, heavy stains, or anything near windows/doors/electrical, bring in a pro. You’ll get safer, longer-lasting results—often for about the same total cost once you factor in your time, rentals, and risk.

Why people consider DIY

  • You already own, can rent or borrow a small pressure washer

  • The area looks “not too bad” and you just want a quick refresh

  • You like weekend projects and don’t mind getting wet and messy

Totally fair. But the right method isn’t always “more pressure.” Many surfaces actually need soft washing (low pressure + professionally formulated detergents) to clean safely and prevent damage.

What the pros do differently (and why it matters)

1) Method selection (pressure vs. soft wash)
We match the cleaning method to the surface and soil, not just the dirt you see. Roofs, stucco, painted siding, pool cages, and trim are almost always soft washed. Concrete, commercial pads, and some masonry can be pressure washed—with the correct tips, distance, and surface cleaners.

2) Chemistry that does the heavy lifting
Pros use targeted detergents for algae, mildew, rust, oil, efflorescence, and battery stains. That means less brute force, safer for finishes, and better “stays-clean-longer” results.

3) Damage prevention
Water can be driven behind siding, under roof tiles, into window seals, and around outlets. High pressure can etch concrete, stripe oxidized siding, shred screens, and scar wood. We’re trained to avoid all of that.

4) Environmental + plant protection
Controlled application, proper dilution, pre-wetting/covering plants, runoff management (especially near canals and drains), and thorough post-rinsing keep your landscape and waterways safe.

5) Insurance, safety, and speed
Ladders + wands are a bad combo. We use the right equipment, work from the ground whenever possible, and carry insurance. Most jobs finish faster—and cleaner—than DIY.

When DIY is usually okay

  • Rinsing patio furniture, bins, small tools

  • Light wash on concrete with a wide fan tip and a surface cleaner attachment

  • Quick garden-hose + detergent refresh on vinyl fencing (no high pressure)

  • Spot-cleaning non-painted, non-delicate items you’re comfortable testing first

DIY ground rules: never use a 0° “pencil” tip, keep the wand moving, start far away and move closer slowly, and avoid ladders with a running pressure washer.

What can go wrong with DIY (and how to avoid it)

  • Etched concrete / tiger stripes: using a wand instead of a surface cleaner, holding the tip too close

  • Oxidation “wand marks” on siding: pressure removes chalked paint unevenly

  • Water behind siding/soffits: spraying upward or too close to seams

  • Leaky windows/doors: forcing water past weatherstripping

  • Screen damage: too much pressure on pool cages

  • Plant burn: improper chemical dilution or poor rinsing

When to call in the pros from AAA Pressure Washing...

  • Roofs (shingle, tile, metal): require soft washing; high pressure can deteriorate roofing materials and void warranties

  • House exteriors (stucco, painted wood, fiber cement): risk of water intrusion and etching

  • Pavers you plan to re-sand/seal: joint loss and sealer damage are common DIY mishaps

  • Heavy stains (rust, oil, battery acid, irrigation): need specialty pretreatments

  • Pool cages & screens: easy to tear or mark with pressure

  • Anything near windows, doors, outlets, or delicate trim
